"Across The Universe" strikes me as an attempt to create a counterpart to Pink Floyd's The Wall, but instead of Floyd and WWI we have the Beatles and Vietnam from an American perspective (with a character from Liverpool thrown in just for authenticity's sake.) It's watchable, but the retooling of what I consider impeccable Beatles tunes is often flaccid and loses much of what makes the songs powerful. Helter Skelter, sung by a woman with an incredible voice reminiscent of Grace Slick, turns into a rock ballad rather than the weird little taste of acid subversion that it was.  Blackbird isn't as sad, Happiness Is A Warm Gun is cut short. All of the punch is gone from the songs - they lack the variation present in the original tunes. Bono's turn with the Walrus is probably the best - but is still lacks a crucial something.

I should say that Eddie Izzard's turn as a tripped-out carnival barker for "Being For The Benefit Of Mister Kite" is a highlight worth seeing.

Beirut Flying Cup-thumb

Beirut, The Flying Club Cup (2007, 4AD) ***
A solid album. More production is evident in The Flying Club Cup than in Beirut's previous efforts, but that doesn't change much of the band's sound. Guyamas Sonora features a different rhythm than the klezmer/rebetika you may have come to expect. I'm pleased to see Condon and his cohorts expanding their range a little, but overall there are no big surprised in store for listeners. I've only given it one listen thus far, and I've yet to discover the song, the one that makes me weepy for no apparent reason (Mount Wroclai from Gulag Orkestar.) Hopefully repeat play will reveal the one that ends up in heavy rotation on my 'mope' playlist.

Tomahawk

Tomahawk, Anonymous (2007, Ipecac) *****
This is amazing. Less rock oriented than Mit Gas or Tomahawk, Anonymous swirls Middle Eastern and Asian sounds together with pounding, reverberating bass drums. Mostly instrumental, but some vocal tracks hearken back to Faith No More (Omaha Dance, the sort of trance-y song you'd expect to hear at a rave behind the local Wal-Mart). While that track isn't a favorite of mine, Sun Dance is spectacular. The opening guitar ticks like a Melvins song and breaks out into a hard-rocking payoff accompanied by what sounds like a Native American chant.
